2025 SCHOLARSHIPS

About the scholarships

The aim of our scholarship scheme is to assist local sporting talent to perform to the best of their ability, by assisting them financially so they have access to greater sporting opportunities.


Some recipients were overseas competing at the time of the scholarship event. 

Their awards were accepted by family members on their behalf.

Liam Qiokata – Hip Hop Dancing with Anomaly Dance Studio

Liam is part of a dance crew, ROAR, who competed at the Hip-Hop NZ Nationals and took out the competition. This qualified them for the Hip-Hop International Worlds in Phoenix, Arizona. This is the first time a group from the Manawatū region has attended the international event.

George is attending the World Triathlon Championships in Wollongong, Australia, in October 2025. He's been accepted as part of the Tri NZ Age Group team and is excited to be competing against athletes from NZ and around the world.

Oscar Skinner – U19 Triathlon World Championship

Oscar is attending the World Triathlon Championships in Wollongong, Australia, in October 2025. Oscar was accepted as part of the Tri NZ Age Group team. He's a passionate junior triathlete whose journey began by following in his older brother's footsteps. 

Jakob Abernethy – NZ Youth Orienteering Team

Oscar Skinner – U19 Triathlon World Championship

This year, Jakob has been selected in the NZ Youth Orienteering Team to compete in Brno, Czech Republic, at the European Youth Orienteering Competition, with 36 countries taking part. Jakob has previously competed in Australia as part of the NZ Secondary Schools Orienteering team.

Unable to attend. Alec is pursuing his goal of travelling to Asia to compete in the Continental Cup Races, where he will compete against some of the best triathletes in the world to improve his World Triathlon ranking. He's dedicated to the sport and has been working hard on training and fundraising to help fund his passion.

Abby was selected as part of the NZ U21 Women's Canoe Polo team, which recently competed in Northern Ireland and Denmark. Abby is a hard-working secondary school student and has been partaking in fundraising efforts because Canoe Polo is an entirely self-funded sport.

Unable to attend. Sam was selected for the NZ U21 Canoe Polo Team and recently travelled to Belfast for the Junior International and the Skovshed tournament in Copenhagen. Sam is in his final year at PNBHS and has been working hard on completing his accelerated programme at school as well as balancing out training and work.

Tom Hawinkels – NZ U21 Canoe Polo Team

Unable to attend. Tom was selected for the NZ U21 Canoe Polo Team and recently travelled to Belfast for the Junior International and the Skovshed tournament in Copenhagen. Tom is passionate about Coaching and developing various local Manawatū teams, including Club, Secondary School, and intermediate-aged kids. He's also dedicated effort to fundraising for the travel to competitions. 

Hayley Austin – Representing NZ at the 2025 World Games in China

Hayley was selected to represent New Zealand at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China. The World Games are the highest level for non-Olympic sports and a massive step in her Canoe Polo journey. Hayleys is a proud member of the Paddle Ferns, the NZ Women's National Team, who are current world champions after winning the 2024 ICF Canoe Polo World Championships.

Elle was selected for the NZ women's U21 Canoe Polo Team and recently travelled to Belfast for the Junior International and the Skovshed tournament in Copenhagen. Elle has been playing polo for 6 years. In 2024, she represented MKCP, winning gold at the Asia Pacific Championships in China, and won the NZSS championships. 

Georgia Wheeler – Representing NZ at the 2025 World Games in China

Georgia is a dedicated athlete who was selected to represent NZ at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China. She's currently working hard to balance out her Veterinary Science study at Massey, while training and giving a lot of time back to Coaching and her Club. Georgia has been a part of the NZ Women's Canoe Polo team, The Paddle Ferns, since 2019, and brought home gold at the 2024 ICF Canoe Polo World Championships.

Charlotte was selected for the NZ women's U21 Canoe Polo Team and recently travelled to Belfast for the Junior International and the Skovshed tournament in Copenhagen. These are two high-level international tournaments, and Charlotte is exceptionally proud to be representing the Junior Paddle Ferns. 

Jodie Kent – NZ U21 Future Black Sticks Squad

Jodie was selected to represent NZ in the U21 Black Sticks Hockey squad, travelling to Chile in December 2025. Earlier this year, Jodie competed with the U21 team in the Oceania Cup. In 2024, she was with the Falcons Premier League team, representing the central North Island region, which took home the gold in the National Competition.

Hayley was selected to represent NZ at this year's U19 World Champs in Wollongong, Australia. In 2024 Hayley regained the NZ Sec. Schools title and placed 1st in the mixed team relay. At the Oceania Junior Elites U19 Triathlon Cup, she earned a podium finish with 3rd overall and the 1st New Zealander and a gold medal in the mixed team relay at the same event.

Anabel Romero Gemmell – NZ Junior Squash Team

Brodie has been selected for the NZ Junior Squash team and recently competed in the Junior World Championships in Egypt. He's extremely honoured to have been selected, and this was the next big step in Brodie's Squash journey. His 2024 achievement record is extensive, including winning the Central Districts 2024 Player of the Year (across all male and female CD Players).

Anabel Romero Gemmell – NZ Junior Squash Team

Anabel recently competed in the Junior World Championships in Egypt, and she leads Team NZ as the number one seed. This was a tremendous honour, and one that reflects the dedication she has put into the sport. In March this year, Anabel achieved a significant milestone by winning the NZ Junior Open, one of NZ's most prestigious squash events.

Jessie Coxon - Triathlon Age Group World Championships – Aquabike

 Jessie is representing NZ for the second year in a row at the Triathlon Age Group World Championships, competing in the Aquabike Event. Last year, Jessie won the age group world title in Spain and qualified again. She is motivated and determined to build on that success and defend her title. 

Harriet Bourke – She Shines On New York/Orlando Dance Tour

Harriet is one of 18 local dancers who have been selected to join the She Shines on Tour, which will travel to New York and Orlando. In 2024, Harriet received a NZ Association of Modern Dance Scholarship Nomination in the contemporary discipline. 

Filip Martin – U19 Age Group World Triathlon Championships

Filip has been selected to represent NZ at the U19 World Triathlon Championship being held in Wollongong Australia later this year. During the summer he won the NZ Triathlon Junior Series for the U16 age group and placed 1st in the U16 Triathlon and 1st in the U16 Aquathon at the NZ Secondary School Championships in Wanaka in March.
