SCHOLARSHIPS

Luke has been involved with Triathlon competitively for the past four years and is also involved in a wide range of community activities, including being on the winning team for the 2021 Race to the Brewery! He was a finalist for this year’s Manawatu Sports Awards in the Junior Sports Person of The Year category and has been selected for the National Tracking Squad for Triathlon NZ. 

Luke finished 5th overall in the 2020-21 Tri NZ Elite Series with his best result being 3rd in the National Series race at the Manawatu Triathlon Festival. 

Abby received several top awards at her Cricket prize giving this year competing in school/club/Manawatu age group Reps, and the women’s Manawatu team and plans to attend Manawatu Crickets High-Performance Academy. 

This winter sees Abby playing school and club Hockey as well as trialing for the Under 15-16 Manawatu Hockey Reps and has also been selected into a Central Districts Junior Girls Squash Squad who are currently training for nationals.

Angus is a Year 13 Student at PNBHS and a Prefect, Kia Ora Club Captain, and multi-sport athlete. During the 2020/21 cricket season, he was selected in the Manawatu U17 team as vice-captain, and named in the Central Districts U17 team, and New Zealand Secondary Schools Maori Cricket team. He has also been selected into the Manawatu Cricket Academy and Central Districts Academy for high-performing cricketers during the winter. 

David is in his final year in the U23 category in Triathlon and his goal is to travel to Europe (Covid dependent) and compete in the ITU Triathlon Circuit and qualify for the U23 European and World Championships at the end of the year. 

Past achievements have been competing in Japan winning the 30th Sahishima Triathlon, as well winning two medals in the 20-24 age group at the World Championships in the Gold Coast. David has also trained in Europe and competed in World Cup events in Hungary, all this while completing a Bachelor of Business Studies majoring in Finance at Massey University.

Adam is currently training to reach one of his main goals in Triathlon which is to compete and gain a podium placing at the elite World Championships later this year with help from his Triathlon coach, Cameron Lamont, based in Germany and his swim coach Andrew Nicholls, here in Palmerston North. 

Focusing on local and national events this year due to the pandemic, Adam’s sponsorship will be put towards costs such as travel, accommodation, and race entry fees.

In July 2020 Anabel finished 3rd in the U15 North Island Squash Champs and a few months later, she competed in the U19 age group to challenge herself and was placed 6th (she went in seeded 13th). At the age of 13, Anabel has become an A grade squash player being one of the youngest players ever to achieve this. 

At the end of 2020, Anabel was selected in the NZ Junior Girls World squad which caters for the top junior prospects of NZ Squash and in February 2021 she successfully defended her NZ secondary schools Racketlon title. Anabel’s goal is to gain selection into the NZ World Junior Squash team.

Kaitlyn is currently in Auckland preparing for the Auckland Open and will be using her scholarship to fund her tournaments in Australia in the coming months.

She is a Professional Squash player and recently competed and won both the Women’s and mixed event at the NZ Doubles Champs after taking a year off.

The Triathlon season so far this year for Sam has been immense!

Sam is currently waiting on news from TRINZ on the status of a World Champs qualification in Bermuda this year. When he is not busy training, Sam is completing a building apprenticeship. 

After switching from Triathlon to Athletics last year, Sam has been working hard to improve his times over his chosen events successfully dropping seconds from each one. With his sights set on a European or Australian racing adventure towards the end of this year and early into 2022, Sam’s goal is to attempt to run the Commonwealth Games qualifying time, or as close to as possible, for the 1500m. 

Sam currently works three jobs and is in his 2nd year of a 3-year degree studying a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise with a minor in Chemistry. Sam’s scholarship will go towards his 2021 running season and allow him to participate in as many national and international races as possible.

Living in Kumeroa and a member of the PN Athletics Club, Taylor travels to Palmerston North during the season for training. This year he has broken three Junior Sprint records at Tararua College and won the 400m at MISSA. Most recently, Taylor came 2nd in NI Secondary Schools 300m sprint. 

Over Easter weekend, Taylor competed in the NZ Inter-Provincial champs and was ranked 7th overall. While continuing to train over winter for the 2021/22 season, Taylor is busy applying for the NZ Secondary Schools Champs and will be attending the Colgate Games in both Wellington and Invercargill in January.

After a disrupted 2020, this year is looking to be very busy for Ryan with plenty of local, regional, and national tournaments to attend. Ryan trains most days of the week and in the weekends, along with working at Property Brokers after school and has been selected for the National Tournament being held in Tauranga in June.

Ryan’s scholarship will be put to great use towards training, travel, and tournaments to assist him in reaching his goals.

After being a member of the PNBHS Senior A Time Trial and Road Cycling Team, to representing NZ in the 2018 Cross Country Mountain Bike World Champs in Switzerland and the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Max changed his focus to Enduro Mountain Biking in 2019. Max rode the mountain bike leg for the More FM team in this year’s Race to the Brewery event with that team finishing 3rd – he has already said he will be back in 2022!

Achieving awesome results in both local and national competitions, Max has made the decision to not compete overseas this year due to the pandemic. Max’s scholarship will help him enter events and pay for travel within NZ.

Cameron recently qualified for and competed in the annual Division II Swim Meet held in Dunedin. Cameron came close to his PB times in all seven races and smashed 2.9 seconds off his PB time in the 400m.

The Winter League kicks off at the end of May and there are five competitions that he will be attending across the country. Cameron’s scholarship will come in handy to help fund these events.

Brodie currently has a No1 NZ ranking for U13 boy and recently attended the NZ Junior Individual U13 Championships in Christchurch, placing 1st. He has represented the Central Districts U19 team at the NZ Junior Inter-district Championships with the team coming 1st in Division 2. 

This October, Brodie will be playing in the NZ Junior Championships in Timaru and will be playing in the Oceania Junior Championships at Bay of Plenty later this year.

At only 19, Caleb is a Cross Country Mountain Biker and Bachelor of Accountancy student and has been Mountain Biking since he was 11 years old.

With numerous achievements to date, Caleb will be making use of the Australian travel bubble to compete in races across the ditch, and in all major events around NZ. 

Caleb is in great form and had a strong ride to get 3rd overall at the iconic Karapoti Classic and 3rd place at the Craters Classic. Competing in Queensland at the end of May, he will be doing a doubleheader cross country race weekend competing against a strong Australian field.

Monique is the current 400m NZ Junior Champion, a NZ U20 Relay Rep and she has a Senior Women’s World Ranking of 551 at 15! 

This season, Monique will be competing in Hastings, Wellington, Tauranga, Christchurch, and Hamilton representing Manawatu/Whanganui at national events. She is attempting to qualify for the World Junior (U20) athletics championships while she is still eligible.
